Maryam Zafari was born in Iran and trained as a lawyer. She immigrated to Canada 14 years ago and has worked with indigenous people in Canada who have been separated from families as children. She has a brother with cognitive challenges and she has a deep empathy and understanding of disability and vulnerability. She moved to Australia 5 months ago and now works for the Salvation Army in Villawood as a D&A counsellor.
